Cortec® is pleased to announce that its three recyclable moisture barrier products have passed recyclability testing per EU Standards (UNI 11743:2019 and the System of Evaluation Aticelca 501:2019)! Testing was performed in the fall of 2020 by a major third-party EU government testing lab to demonstrate compliance with EU recyclability criteria. This is a significant step toward helping users identify products that can make the “circular economy” a reality for moisture barrier packaging, which is typically difficult to recycle through normal channels due to the use of polyethylene or waxed coatings.

EcoShield® Barrier Paper is a premium recyclable and repulpable barrier paper with a Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR) comparable to polycoated paper and much superior to waxed paper. It also provides a barrier to water and grease. It is made with components formulated in compliance with FDA Code of Federal Regulations Title 21:
- 176.170-Components of paper and paperboard in contact with aqueous and fatty foods
- 176.180-Components of paper and paperboard in contact with dry food
EcoShield® Barrier Paper is a USDA Certified Biobased Product and contains 65% USDA certified biobased content. It can be used in a variety of applications, such as packaging greasy items or protecting moisture sensitive components.

EcoShield® VpCI®-144 is recyclable barrier paper with a special dimension—corrosion protection. The barrier coating on one side of the paper resists the ingress of water vapor, water, and grease while the VpCI® coating on the other side actively inhibits corrosion by creating a protective molecular layer on the surface of the metal parts wrapped inside the paper. EcoShield® VpCI®-144 is also a USDA Certified Biobased Product and contains 69% USDA certified biobased content.
EcoShield® Barrier Coating for Paper and Corrugated allows manufacturers to apply Cortec’s recyclable barrier coating technology to their own paper and corrugated packaging to avoid the recycling challenges of polyethylene and waxed papers. In addition to being certified recyclable according to the System of Evaluation Aticelca 501:2019, EcoShield® Barrier Coating is also certified repulpable according to TAPPI T 240 om-12 Repulpability Testing. It is formulated in compliance with FDA Code of Federal Regulations Title 21:
- 176.170-Components of paper and paperboard in contact with aqueous and fatty foods
- 176.180-Components of paper and paperboard in contact with dry food
EcoShield® Barrier Coating is also available from Cortec’s European plant, EcoCortec®. EcoCortec® has been producing repulpable moisture barrier papers for years and is excited to now have an official certificate to confirm product recyclability, as well.
