Develop Node-to-Cloud Applications using the Bluetooth® IoT Development Kit

Bluetooth Low Energy is a popular choice of connectivity for IoT devices catering to smart homes, smart buildings, asset monitoring and personal IoT. The Bluetooth IoT Development Kit (B-IDK) featuring RSL10, the industry’s lowest Bluetooth 5 certified SoC, enables rapid prototyping and development of Bluetooth Low Energy based edge-to-cloud applications. The B-IDK hardware is comprised of a baseboard and daughter cards that support a wide range of sensors and actuators.

The freely-downloadable B-IDK software provides a complete development environment with code for several example use-cases. The code is delivered as a CMSIS pack. CMSIS is a delivery mechanism for software components, device parameters, board support, example code and detailed documentation. The CMSIS pack released with the B-IDK supports several use cases including a custom service example that exposes all attached sensors and actuators to the RSL10 Sense and Control Mobile Application.

In addition to reading the attached sensors and controlling the actuators, the RSL10 Sense and Control application can be configured to send data via MQTT to various cloud service providers. For IoT manufacturers, cloud services offer the potential to transform their devices from simply being connected to having a complete, connected network around them. This network enables manufacturers to provide web services, extend data storage and processing capabilities and enable remote monitoring.

With an increasing number of options for Cloud Service Provider (CSP), OEMs have more flexibility as far as selecting the right vendor for their application. Amazon Web Services, Microsoft® Azure, IBM Bluemix and even custom MQTT brokers are all supported.

The mobile application can be used to read sensor values and set actuator values, publish sensor values to an MQTT broker and subscribe actuator settings from the MQTT broker.

By providing hardware to cloud functionality and multiple sensing and actuator options, the easy-to-use B-IDK is ideal for developing and rapidly prototyping Bluetooth Low Energy-based IoT applications.
