Chromasens Accelerates Use of 3D Machine Vision in Automotive Manufacturing with 3DPIXA Compact Camera

The automotive industry has always promoted automation in production processes, initially on the assembly line and now in the robot-supported manufacturing of today’s Industrial Internet of Things. Machine vision, a key component of automation, was adopted early by the auto industry where it has evolved from simple 2D measurements to 3D surface inspection of parts for microscopic defects. In particular, 3D benefits robot-guided automation by giving the process a way to see.

To help the industry continue its move from 2D vision to 3D machine vision Chromasens has introduced a smaller, easier-to-integrate version of its 3DPIXA compact line scan stereo 3D camera. The new 3DPIXA Compact is approximately 30 percent smaller, making it an ideal choice for space-sensitive installations with a restrictive field of view or mounting space requirements. The 3DPIXA Compact relies on the universal Camera Link interface for maximum reliability and flexibility.

Five models of the 3DPIXA Compact are available to meet the imaging needs of automotive industry that can benefit from 3D technology. The cameras’ field of view ranges from 36mm to 105mm and height measurement varies from 1.32mm to 8.2mm, with operating speed up to 30 kHz line scan frequencies at full resolution.

Using 3DPIXA Compact cameras, imaging engineers can simultaneously acquire 3D and color 2D images at a maximum of 6250 pixels per line to keep up with the requirements of the production lines. Cylindrical parts, such as automotive filters, can be 100% inspected as they rotate along a production line.
