AMD to showcase open PC technology based SMACH Z handheld gaming console

AMD announced to showcase to gaming enthusiasts the upcoming SMACH Z handheld gaming PC at Tokyo Game Show (Hall 2, booth 2-N02). Based on open PC technology and designed for playing PC games on the go, the handheld console makes more than 20,000 PC games mobile. Leveraging the pioneering AMD ‘Zen’ CPU and ‘Vega’ GPU architectures, the SMACH Z gives gamers the power to play any AAA game anywhere – natively! At Tokyo Game Show players can experience the console’s performance, which is able to host high-end games like League of Legends, Rocket League and Alien: Isolation at 1080p. And even Witcher 3, GTA 5 and Dark Souls 3 can be played at 720p.

The SMACH Z handheld gaming console makes PC gaming enthusiasts’ dreams come true, enabling them to play high-end games natively on an open, x86 based ultra-portable handheld-sized device in brilliant 1080p definition, or even 4K UHD when using an external screen connected via DisplayPort. The openness and compatibility of the SMACH Z is a key differentiator for this platform, as it not only supports native PC games and services such as Steam, GOG, Origin, Itchio, Battle.net, and UPlay but also streaming services such as PlayStation Nowand any other PC-compatible services. Even the earliest games can be played without restrictions on the SMACH Z, which runs Windows 10 or the Linux based SMACH Z OS. On top of all this, it provides a truly immersive multimedia experience with hardware-supported 4K HDR video streaming.

By connecting a keyboard, mouse and external display, the SMACH Z turns into a handheld mobile computer capable of running all common productivity software offerings, including services such as video conferencing thanks to the optionally integrated 5 Megapixel camera.

The SMACH Z handheld consoles shown at Tokyo Game Show are powered by the latest generation of AMD Ryzen™ Embedded V1000 processors, specifically the Ryzen™ Embedded V1605B SoC with AMD Radeon™ Vega 8 graphics. They can be run with Linux or Windows 10. All integrate a 6-inch 1080p touch screen and a 5 Megapixel camera, up to 16GB of RAM as well as up to 256 GB of SSD storage extendable via an SD card slot. The extensive connectivity options include USB-C, USB-A and Micro USB as well as DisplayPort and a mini audio jack. For wireless communication the consoles support WiFi 802.11 b/g/n/d/e/h/i and Bluetooth v2.1. All in all, there are over 20,000 compatible games available out of the box.
