3G Schottky – Smaller, Better, Cheaper

“Diotec’s Schottky 3rd generation diodes use a smaller chip but simultaneously provide lower forward voltage Vf and lower reverse leakage current Ir comparing to previous generations” says SOS electronic.

3G Schottky rectifiers portfolio includes diodes with very low forward voltage drop, reverse voltages from 20V to 45V and forward current ratings from 0.5A to 30A. Let’s pick a couple of examples from a wide assortment.

SK34SMA-3G

This is Diotec’s flagship in SMA package with the following parameters:

Vf <0,32V at 1A/75°C

Ir <120 µA at 10V/75°C

Cj ~ 90 pF at 4 V,

and is thus perfectly suited for all kinds of polarity protection or as an output rectifier in AC/DC or DC/DC converters.

The diode is also available as SK34SMA-3G-Q (AEC-Q101 Compliant) and SK34SMA-3G-AQ (AEC-Q101 Qualified). For more information, please see the document.

SK34SMA L217 15MQ040N

This diode is the perfect output rectifier for wireless charging of battery-powered devices. It is based on SK34SMA-3G and developed for Diotec customer, a leading manufacturer of battery-powered consumer electronics. It has significantly better parameters than the 15MQ040N – the industry standard for this application.

This diode SK34SMA L217 15MQ040N provides an optimal compromise between reverse current Ir and forward voltage Vf.

Vf typ. 0,35V at 2A/125°C

Ir typ. 8uA at 4V/50°C

Low Vf allows high efficiency and fast charging times, while low Ir at typical battery voltage around 4V extends device standby time.

SGL2-40-3G

This is a 2A/40V Schottky diode in the MiniMelf package. It offers a forward voltage drop of less than 530mV at 2A and a reverse leakage of below 40µA at 40V. Thus this diode is ideally suited for battery charging circuits, where the high forward current is required for fast charging and low reverse current for a low discharging rate.

Further applications include the output rectification in AC/DC and DC/DC converters, polarity protection and free-wheeling diodes. The advantages of the MiniMelf package over lead-frame packages such as SMA are presented in the short video.

SBT1045-3G and the SBT1845-3G

These two these types are power Schottky rectifiers in the TO-220AC package with the currents in the forward direction 10A and 18A.

Compared to the previous generation, they offer lower forward voltage and thus lower power losses of up to 10%. Typical applications include output rectifiers in AC/DC and DC/DC converters, polarity protection for batteries and free-wheeling diodes in DC drives.

SBT1045-3G is also an excellent choice for output rectification in LED drivers. Typical diode parameters in this application are:

Vf typ. 390mV at If = 10A and Tj = 125°C

Ir typ. 10mA at Vr = 5V and Tj = 125°C

SBX3040-3G

The axial lead diode SBX3040-3G features a very low forward voltage and a low leakage current and is thus ideally suited for solar bypass diode applications but also reverse polarity protection. It meets the requirements of IEC 61215 bypass diode thermal test and can be used in solar junction boxes for up to 15A.

Typical diode parameters in these applications are:

Vf <0,39V at 15A/75°C

Ir <220µA at 12V/75°C

The 3rd generation of Schottky diodes can be found in our assortment.
