Overcurrents aren’t the only threat to modern electronics. Excessively high temperatures are increasingly becoming the number one enemy due to high power density. But how can such a danger be avoided? Ideally with a fail-safe device consisting of a thermal fuse and a shunt resistor.

Since an overtemperature protection is usually triggered only by thermal conditions and largely ignores the current flow, it makes sense to combine such an overtemperature protection with a current measurement sensor in the form of a shunt to monitor the circuit. In this way, both a rapidly occurring fault (overcurrent) by means of a shunt and a creeping temperature increase are detected and reliably interrupted by the thermal protection.
