Introducing the UMAC Miniature High Capacity Energy Device from Murata

Murata has released the UMAC, a miniature device with a high energy storage capacity. The device has been developed to meet growing demand for compactness, large capacity, extended cycle life (to eliminate the need for replacement), low internal resistance, fast charging and discharging, and the ability to withstand load fluctuations.

The UMAC, can be used as a secondary battery in the same way as a capacitor would traditionally be used, however the UMAC, energy device exhibits superior charge/discharge characteristics and has an extended service life compared with conventional batteries. Furthermore the device is able to maintain a flat voltage characteristic under a wide range of load characteristics.

The UMAC, device has a nominal voltage of 2.3V and a capacity of 3mAh, ESR is just 800 milliohms and operating temperature range is 0°C to +70°C. The device can be discharged at a maximum rate of 10C (30mA).

The characteristics of the UMAC, energy device enable it to be used in a broad range of applications including wearable devices where small size, high rate charge and long cycle life are desirable properties along with a chemically stable composition that prevents overheating or combustion even if short circuited. Other applications include wireless sensor nodes such as those deployed in Internet of Things (IoT) networks where the high discharge rate can negate the need for additional peak-assist capacitors, the low self-discharge characteristic of the device minimises loss of stored energy meaning products have longer run time. Backup power for small low power products is another area the UMAC, series can be utilised due to its high discharge rate characteristic, this allows it to be used in a variety of backup power applications over a wide output range.

The below graphs demonstrate the discharge performance and charge/discharge cycle performance of UMAC, under various operating conditions.
