IEEE 802.3cg Ethernet Transforming Industry 4.0 and the Smart Factory


The fourth Industrial Revolution, or simply Industry 4.0, is transforming the communication paradigm within modern factories. Networks must support more sophisticated connectivity solutions to meet the increasing demands of edge-node sensing and computing. Organizations need a reliable top-to-bottom Ethernet solution to support higher data rates, increasingly more connected devices, and centralized supervision.

The data shared factory-wide from sensors via the Ethernet network at the edge node—device layer—or after being aggregated at the application layer—Big Data—holds valuable information. A new IEEE standard 802.3cg overcomes today’s gap in Industrial Ethernet by delivering low-cost, 10 Mbps communication to field devices using two new physical layers: 10BASE-T1L for long-range, point-to-point communication up to 1,000 meters and 10BASE-T1S for multi-point communication up to 25 meters. Wiring and installation costs can dominate the networking budgets for many modern factories.
