Triple power – 3 sensors combined in 1 air quality sensor

SEN54-SDN-T is a combination of the volatile organic compound (VOC), particulate matter (PM), temperature (T),  relative humidity (RH) sensors and also a microcontroller. With this sensor you can produce your products quicker and for a lower development cost.

One of our Product Specialists at SOS electronic Miroslav Piskor wrote some interesting information about the new  Sensirion combined solution in the sensing  category of air quality.

“Sensirion strives to make the integration of SEN54 into your product as easy as possible. They provide mechanical design, assembly guidelines and 3D models. To expedite SW development, Sensirion provides source code for the generic driver, and Arduino and Raspberry Pi drivers.”

All documentation is available on the SEN54 product page.

Technology and Benefits of SEN54-SDN-T sensor node Sensirion

PM Sensing

All-in-one air quality sensing solution SEN54, just like SPS30, uses optimized flow channel geometry that minimizes turbulence and sheath-flow technology – air filtered through a HEPA filter surrounds the stream with particulate matter particles and prevents the particles from circulating or settling in the optical chamber. This allows SEN54 to operate 24 hours/day for more than 10 years.

PM 2.5 mass concentration is calibrated according to high-end reference instrument TSI DustTrak DRX 8533. SEN54 measures the mass concentration of PM1.0 and PM2.5 particles. PM4.0 and PM10 outputs are estimated from PM1.0 and PM2.5 measurements considering typical aerosol profiles.

RH and T Sensing

The SHT4x RH/T sensor is placed inside of SEN54, but the mechanical design ensures an optimal coupling to the ambient environment. Internal algorithm compensates measured values for SEN54 self-heating and, in addition, it allows improvement of the response time by setting of STAR (Sensirion Temperature Acceleration Routine) parameters.

VOC Sensing

Sensirion VOC Algorithm processes the measured values from SGP40 and transforms them into a VOC index in the range 0 to 500. The algorithm is tunable by using 6 different parameters.

Features

  • Communication through I2C
  • RH sensing accuracy ±4.5%
  • Temperature sensing accuracy ±0.45°C
  • VOC sensing: < ±15 VOC Index points or 15 % VOC Index (the higher value applies)
  • Particulate matter sensing:
  • Mass concentration precision for PM1 and PM2.5: ±5 μg/m3 ± 5% measured value
  • Mass concentration precision for PM4 and PM10: ±25 μg/m3

Applications

  • Air purifiers
  • Air conditioners
  • Air quality monitors
  • Ventilation systems

How to Start?

The easiest way is to connect the SEK-SEN5x evaluation kit to the PC through SEK-SensorBridge and use Sensirion’s ControlCenter software. The kit also contains a 4-pin jumper wire cable that enables integration into existing platforms like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, etc. Source codes are available on Sensirion Github.
